175 Years of The Midland Railway Celebration

Visit the Midland Railway – Butterley  for a very special day out to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the formation of the Midland Railway.

  • Enjoy a heritage train ride.
  • Explore with a special Midland Railway Trail.
  • Visit a special exhibition of Midland Railway artefacts not normally on display – Located in Victorian Railwayman’s Church
  • Tug models and information on Heysham Harbour and the tug boat Wyvern, which was ran and owned by the Midland Railway Company on Butterley Platform

Trains depart from Butterley at:  11.00am, 12.25pm, 2.00pm & 3.20pm.

Get off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore the Museum Complex, where you will be able to visit the Matthew Kirtley Building (Railway Museum), Demonstration Signal Box, Victorian Railwayman’s Church, the West Shed and the Country Park. Other attractions may also be open.   (Please note that this is not possible on the 3.20pm departure.)

Trains return from Swanwick Junction at:  11.45am,  1.15pm, 2.45pm & 4.00pm.

Today’s trains are steam hauled.

Parking at Butterley Station is FREE.

Gift Aid is available to UK tax payers, enabling the Midland Railway Trust to reclaim 25% of the amount paid from the government. Gift Aid visitors will receive vouchers to spend in the shops and buffets as a thank you for payment by this method. This represents excellent value for the visitor as well as benefiting the Midland Railway Trust.

The narrow gauge Golden Valley Light Railway will be operating during this event using the historic Ashover Light Railway Carriage No. 4. Please note a separate fare is payable on this railway.
