If you are looking for a day out, then the Midland Railway – Butterley might just be the place you are looking for!
Experience the way travel used to be with a train ride through the wonderful Derbyshire countryside.
Today we are dedicating our train services to Sapper Alfred Amos on the centenary of his death on the Western Front. Before serving his country Sapper Amos was a Midland Railway employee based at Butterley Station and at 10.45 am we will be dedicating a small memorial to him in the station. Join us on the platform at 11am for a 2 minute silence as we remember him and the other Midland Railway men who gave their lives in WW1.
Trains depart from Butterley at: 11.05am, 12.20pm, 2.00pm & 3.20pm.
Today’s trains are planned to be steam hauled but we cannot guarantee that steam services will be operating.
Get off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore the Museum Complex, where you will be able to visit the Matthew Kirtley Building (Railway Museum), Demonstration Signal Box, Victorian Railwayman’s Church, the West Shed and the Country Park. Other attractions may also be open. (Please note that this is not possible on the 3.20pm departure.)
The narrow gauge Golden Valley Light Railway will be also be running trains today using the historic Ashover Light Railway Carriage No.4 for which a separate fare is payable.
Trains return from Swanwick Junction at: 11.50am, 1.10pm, 2.50pm & 4.00pm.
