Halloween at the Midland Railway – Butterley is a very ‘spooktacular’ affair. Heritage trains operate for the Derbyshire schools’ autumn half term holiday.
On arrival at Butterley you will find a specially decorated Booking Hall in the Station – enter if you dare! This is your gateway to:
- Wizard Competition
- Railway Museum
- West Shed Experience with spooky crafts
- Victorian Railwayman’s Church
- Demonstration Signal Box
- Shops & Buffets
Trains depart from Butterley Station at: 11am, 12.25pm, 2pm and 3.20pm.
Get off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore the Museum Complex, where you will be able to visit the Matthew Kirtley Building (Railway Museum), Demonstration Signal Box, Victorian Railwayman’s Church, the West Shed and the Country Park. Other attractions may also be open. (Please note that this is not possible on the 3.20pm departure.)
Trains return from Swanwick Junction at: 11.50am, 1.15pm, 2.50pm & 4.00pm.
Today’s trains are planned to be steam hauled but we cannot guarantee that steam services will be operating.

This represents excellent value for the visitor as well as benefiting the Midland Railway Trust.
The narrow gauge Golden Valley Light Railway will be operating during this event. Please note a separate fare is payable on this railway.
