On arrival at Butterley you will find a specially decorated entrance and Station Booking Hall – enter if you dare!

  • Pick up and start the “Wizard and Witch Hunt” Competition and
  • Take a peek in Butterley Shop.
  • Meet and Greets with our friendly spooks!

Fancy Dress Welcome!

Then Step aboard a heritage Diesel Multiple Unit. These have really large windows and so there is an excellent view all round. Plus, you can see into the cab and see the driver in action, as well as the track ahead.

Trains depart from Butterley Station at: 11am, 11.50am, 12.40pm, 2.00pm, 2.50pm & 3.45pm

Visitors arriving for the 3:45pm departure will not be able to explore the museum complex at Swanwick Junction. We recommend arriving at Butterley no later than 2:00pm if you wish to look round at Swanwick Junction.

Get off the train at Spooky Swanwick Junction and explore the Museum Complex, where you will be able to visit the:

  • Demonstration Signal Box
  • Children’s Play area
  • Country Park
  • Stationary Power building
  • Road Transport building
  • West Shed Experience
  • Deeley’s Tearoom
  • Meet and Greets with our resident Wizard and friendly spooks at various times throughout the day!

Story telling on the platform

Local author “Gareth Baker” is with us again over our “Wizards & Spooks” event taking charge as the Master Wizard storyteller in Deeley’s tearoom.

Enjoy some light snacks whilst the kids are kept occupied by enchanting Wizard stories typically made up on the spot, using a range of objects and countless ideas.

Times will be advertised on arrival.

For the slightly braver, get ready for a fright in an immersive Ghost Story Told in St Saviours Church.

In 1794 The Butterley Tunnel was dug by hand deep beneath the Midland Railway, its history is clouded in mystery until a recent discovery was made by staff at Swanwick Junction, hidden beneath the floor of St Saviours Church, this led us to the discovery of a much darker secret, something stranger than we could ever have imagined. And now after a century of the unknown it’s time to reveal what, or who the Butterley Tunnel has been hiding,

Take a pew and experience what we found …

Show times will be advertised on the day.

Please note: – This show contains smoke, lighting effects and loud sounds with fiction & nonfiction elements to the story. Parental guidance is advised.

Trains return from Swanwick Junction at:  11.35am, 12.25pm, 1.15pm, 2.35pm, 3.25pm & 4.00pm.
