New for 2020, “How it Worked” lets you get up close and personal with the way a railway and its staff operated in bygone eras.  You can pick up a shunters pole and try your hand at coupling and uncoupling vintage freight wagons, or maybe you want to dig around the engine and generator of a mainline diesel locomotive, then even try your hand at throwing that shovel of coal onto a fire of a steam locomotive.  We won’t forget the younger members, as the Golden Valley Light Railway who will be offering “Jobs” that suit the smaller ones in your party.

Of course you may only want to stand back and watch, well that’s always possible.  Conducted tours, with limited numbers and at set times, will take place around a locomotive workshop and, for the first time, a visit to the large Signalbox at Swanwick Junction to see the life of a signalman in action.  All crews on the day will be expecting to explain their duties, so you won’t need to be shy in asking questions.

Also planned are:

  • Experience the changes in Passenger Travel with coaches from 1866 up to 1948.
  • “Oh Mr Porter”, try your hand at Moving the Goods.
  • Get your “snap” for the day from Deeley’s special menu.

All activities are subject to weather conditions and staff availability on the day, but do come suitably attired if you want to take part, though some protective wear will be available.  A special site guide to activities, locations and times will be available on the day.  And don’t forget your camera for the special photo!

Check our social media platforms for updates for more activities as they become available.
