Duchess of Sutherland Weekend

October 6 - October 7

Details

Start: 06/10/2018 End: 07/10/2018 Timetable: Timetable A – Loco Hauled
This event has now passed.

Experience the sights and sounds of the iconic LMS pacific locomotive No.6233 “Duchess of Sutherland” as she steams through the Derbyshire Countryside hauling our passenger service trains for this special weekend.

Appearing in her new LMS “crimson lake” livery, this locomotive has just returned to steam following a major overhaul at her home, the West Shed, within the Midland Railway – Butterley’s museum complex.

This will be the only opportunity to travel behind 6233 in 2018 at the Midland Railway-Butterley, so don’t miss this chance to come aboard and experience train travel the way it used to be in its golden era.

LMS Royal Special Saloon 45000 is also being made available for a rare opportunity for it to be seen running behind 6233.

The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust patrons will be on hand to answer questions on 45000’s operational and restoration history.

Please note:  45000 will only be available for inspection whilst in the platform at Butterley and Swanwick Junction Stations between departures.  It will not be possible to travel in this coach.

We are grateful to the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust for allowing us to offer this very special experience.

Trains will be “topped and tailed” by the “Duchess of Sutherland” and a heritage mainline diesel locomotive.

Trains depart from Butterley at:  11.00am, 12.20pm, 2.00pm & 3.20pm.

Get off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore the Museum Complex, where you will be able to visit the Matthew Kirtley Building (Railway Museum), Demonstration Signal Box, Victorian Railwayman’s Church, the West Shed and the Country Park. Other attractions may also be open.  (Please note that this is not possible on the 3.20pm departure.)

Trains return from Swanwick Junction at:  11.50am, 1.10pm, 2.50pm & 4.00pm.

Today’s trains are planned to be hauled by the “Duchess of Sutherland” but we cannot guarantee this in the eventuality of a locomotive failure or other unforeseen problems.  Royal Saloon 45000 is subject to availability on the day and we reserve the right to remove it from operation.
