Large format glass negatives, through prints of varying sizes

The Midland Railway Trust holds a number of photographic collections ranging from large format glass negatives, through prints of varying sizes to colour slides.  Digitising some of these collections is currently underway.

Derby Works Paint Shop, 13th March 1914

The Midland Railway Trusts holds 873 images from Derby Works on 6″ x 8″ and 8″ x 10″ glass plate negatives collected by Brian Radford. These are duplicates of the originals with some also in the National Collection held by the Science Museum Group. Additionally listed are negatives covering S&DJR, War Dept and Miscellaneous images around Derby and the Works.

Midland Railway 0-4-4T 1P “Back Tank” No. 1212

This Ron Jarvis collection spans the years 1933 to 1956 and was taken in the main by Ron Jarvis, though it does contain copy images from other notable photographers of the era, including his brother Jim.

The collection is of Quarter Plate (3″ x 4″) glass negatives and runs to nearly 2500 photographs. This particular image was taken on 15th September 1933 at Derby Works, with the Roundhouse in the background.

Crewe Works Collection Duplicates

The Midland Railway Trusts holds approximately 530 images from the Crewe Works Collections on 6″ x 8″ glass plate negatives collected by Brian Radford.

There are over 300 images in larger sizes including 8″x 10″, 10″x 12″ and 12″x 15″ plates. All these negatives are duplicates of the original negatives held in the National Collection within the Science Museum Group.

Limited work so far has listed, but not fully scanned, some of the 6″ x 8″ and 12″ x 15″ plates. This list can be found here as a PDF.

Glass Lantern Slide, Accident on the Cromford and High Peak Line

The Midland Railway Trusts holds many Lantern Slide images collected by Brian Radford. These were mainly used to illustrate talks.
