Gatehouse and coal merchants offices and signal box

Gatehouse & Coal Merchants Offices

The Gatehouse hosts the layouts of the  Swanwick Junction Model Railway Club, which is open most weekends.

The nearby former Coal Merchant’s Offices house disabled toilets and the parent and baby room.

Historical note: These buildings were rescued from St. Mary’s Goods Yard in Derby and, whilst many new materials were used in their reconstruction, they are original in design.

Swanwick Junction Signal Box

The large Midland Railway signal box is the main operating signal box for Swanwick Junction. It has been completely restored to control the large number of tracks in and out of this complicated junction, with a four platform station, two branch lines and access to the locomotive depot and tracks in the museum complex. As it is a working signal box, we regret that visitors are not allowed inside.

Historical note: This signal box was rescued from Kettering on the former Midland Railway main line to London.
