Sketch Found of Mystery Man

A sketch of a man dating from 1890 has been found during the restoration of a vintage railway carriage at the Midland Railway - Butterley. The portrait was found on the back of some panelling, dating from 1890, when the coach was built at Derby Works. It is a little better than the usual workman’s doodles, so who drew it and who did he sketch?

Midland Railway Trust volunteer, Alan Bridger, will see an 18 year dream become reality when a restored Victorian railway carriage carries passengers over the weekend of 29th April – 1st May at the Midland Railway – Butterley. Alan has worked tirelessly on the project since the carriage body was recovered from a garden in Shirley, West Midlands, in 1999.

Frankie Cosmos, Skinny Girl Diet and The Just Joans are among 19 artists and DJs added to the Indietracks festival line-up. They’ll join The Wedding Present, Cate Le Bon, Martha, Joanna Gruesome, The Tuts and dozens more performers at the festival, which takes place on the weekend of 28-30 July 2017.

18 Year Restoration Project Nears Completion

The restoration of a Victorian Midland Railway coach is approaching completion and has moved from the restoration shed to the museum at the Midland Railway – Butterley. The coach, built in Derby Works in 1890, is a Party Saloon and visitors will be able to travel in it for the first time at the Vintage Weekend: 29th & 30th April and 1st May.

Butterley Brick Week

The Midland Railway – Butterley will be running a very special event from 27th May to 4th June. Butterley Brick Week features the Bricks Britannia collection of amazing models built by Bright Bricks, including an 8 metre long model of Flying Scotsman hauling Pullman coaches that has been built with over 100,000 Lego bricks.

New Chimney Cast

The Midland Railway – Butterley is continuing with the restoration of locomotive 47357. The latest part to be created is a new chimney. This has been cast by the Manor Foundry in nearby Ilkeston using a pattern created by one of the Trust's volunteers. The chimney can be seen being fettled in the photo.

Steam Returns

Steam traction returns to the Midland Railway – Butterley this weekend (1st&2nd April) when former Great Western Railway locomotive number 5619 will be hauling trains, and from now on steam trains will be in action most weekends .

Easter Trains

The Midland Railway – Butterley will be running trains every day from 5th to 19th April over the Easter Holiday. There will be a special competition for the younger visitors and plenty to see for all age groups. Trains will be steam hauled at weekends with the heritage Diesel Multiple Units in use on week days.

Museum Display Changes

Volunteers at the Midland Railway – Butterley have been changing the displays in the Museum over the winter. The changes have allowed two steam locomotives that are stored to be put on display and the vintage carriages have been moved giving a different view for visitors.

Joan Bows Out

The narrow gauge Golden Valley Light Railway will see the last steaming of its locomotive “Joan” for some time on 1st, 2nd and 9th April. Work is now focussed on completing the restoration of the GVLR’s other steam locomotive, an O&K 0-4-0 well tank.

The Midland Railway – Butterley will be hosting a very special Teddy Bears Picnic on the 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th March. Teddy Bears will be on display throughout the railway and any child brought in by their own Teddy Bear will be able to travel free of charge.
