The DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) Gala returns to the Midland Railway – Butterley
All four of the railway’s operational DMU units will be in action, celebrating the return to service of the 66-year-old Class 108, which has recently undergone major work to its brakes and reversing system.
Experience the way travel used to be with a train ride through the wonderful Derbyshire countryside on one of the Midland Railway – Butterley’s heritage Diesel Multiple Units. These trains have really large windows and so there is an excellent view all round. Plus you can see into the cab and see the driver in action, as well as the track ahead.
Get off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore the Complex, where you will be able to visit the Demonstration Signal Box, Victorian Railwayman’s Church and the Country Park. Other attractions may also be open.
The popular Pacer units will run in multiple in different formations on each day, while some departures will also take place from the rarely-used Platform 4 at Swanwick Junction.
All four units are products of the famous Litchurch Lane works in Derby.
The Class 108, currently in its 32nd year of preservation, spent its working life on secondary passenger services in the Manchester and Chester areas.
The Class 141 railbus was the forerunner of the better-known Pacer trains and is now the only one of its type still capable of running in service. It last ran on the mainline in 1999 and has been at the Midland Railway – Butterley for 20 years.
The two Class 142s are displayed in their 1980s liveries. Each is reputed to have travelled more than three million miles during its 36 years in service.
An intense timetable will run throughout the weekend, giving visitors the opportunity to ride behind and compare the different types of DMU, as well as enjoying the other facilities on site.
