Enjoy a relaxing train ride through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and experience the charm of traditional rail travel. Travel aboard one of the Midland Railway – Butterley’s heritage Diesel Multiple Units, with large windows perfect for taking in the views. Children will love being able to see into the driver’s cab and watch the journey unfold along the track ahead – making it a fun and memorable day out for all ages.
As part of our summer Teddy Bears’ Picnic, children are invited to bring along their favourite teddy bear and take part in our Teddy Bear Trail around the site. Pick up an activity sheet, search for hidden bears and see how many you can find during your visit.
At Swanwick Junction, explore our heritage site, which is packed with things to see and do for all ages. Discover the Victorian Railwayman’s Church, step back in time in the West Shed Experience, and explore the Road Transport Building, Stationary Power House and Golden Valley Light Railway.
Make sure you also visit our popular beach area, where younger visitors can enjoy some seaside-themed fun, build sandcastles and spend time playing with their teddy bears. Buckets and spades are available to purchase on site, and an ice cream is the perfect way to complete a summer day out at the railway.
Younger visitors can also let off steam in the children’s play area, while families enjoy a stroll around the Country Park.
Other buildings on site may also be open on the day, subject to volunteer availability.
Deeley’s Tearooms at Swanwick Junction will be open throughout the day, serving a selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks, sandwiches and ice creams.
All Teddy Bears’ Picnic activities are included with normal admission and train travel tickets.
Please note: Free Parking and entrance are at Butterley station. Swanwick Junction Station is not accessible with vehicles
