This is the home of two LMS Stanier Pacific locomotives, “Princess Margaret Rose” and the “Duchess of Sutherland” built in the 1930s. Here you will also find other locomotives, a former Royal Saloon, used by Sir Winston Churchill during the Second World War, a restored Dynamometer Car, 21″ gauge locomotives originally built for Butlin’s Holiday Camps, a replica of the office of the locomotive designer Sir William Stanier and a small exhibits area. There is also a large viewing gallery over the workshop area, where you can see steam locomotives undergoing restoration.
Please note: The West Shed Experience is owned and operated by the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust and, although it is usually open every day, the Midland Railway – Butterley cannot guarantee its opening days and times. The “Duchess of Sutherland” is used to operate mainline steam tours and so is not always available to view at the West Shed.
