Victorian Train Weekend – Update
Following further discussion and careful consideration, Midland Railway-Butterley has decided to postpone the Vintage Train Event due to the ongoing dry conditions.
The decision reflects the current conditions across the railway and surrounding countryside. With exceptionally dry ground conditions and very little rainfall, the risk of lineside fires remains significantly higher than we would normally expect at this time of year.
The safety of our railway, volunteers, visitors and the surrounding countryside must come first.
Our heritage diesel services will therefore continue throughout this period, allowing visitors to enjoy the railway while conditions remain unsuitable for the return of steam operations.
We will provide further updates regarding the Vintage Train Event and the return of steam services as soon as we are able to do so.

Join us this weekend as we operate BR Class 45108 hauling our classic Mk 1 carriages, and experience the way rail travel used to be. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a nostalgic journey through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.
Hop off the train at Swanwick Junction and explore our Museum Complex, packed with things to see and do for all ages.
Discover the Victorian Railwayman’s Church, step back in time in the West Shed Experience, and explore the Road Transport Building, Stationary Power House & Golden Valley Light Railway. Younger visitors can let off steam in the kids’ play area, while families can enjoy a stroll around the Country Park.
Other attractions may also be open on the day, all subject to volunteer availability.
Deeley’s Tearooms at Swanwick Junction will also be open, serving a selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks, ice creams, and sandwiches — perfect for a relaxing break during your visit.
Please note: Free Parking and entrance are at Butterley station. Swanwick Junction Station is not accessible with vehicles.
